MILITARISM IS NOT AND CAN NEVER BE A HUMANITARIAN IDEOLOGY

No offense intended to Ms Kwaitkowski...I am a veteran of the USAF

It is astounding to hear a person who has made a career of the military try to talk about humanitarian ideals without trying to imply a role for the military in any humanitarian endeavor. Have we lost the ability to imagine of a society with no purpose for a military? There is only one purpose for a military. It is to protect a nation. It does this by deterring and/or defending from an attack by hostile nations. Americans have been propagandized and brainwashed into empathizing with the role of the military and the people who wear the uniform. How many of us admire the warriors when it is actually their bravery that should be admired and not that they are warriors. (Thank you for your service regardless what they actually did while in the military) This is only necessary when a nation is engaged in war. Warriors have no place in a peaceful society that abhors violence. Yet, we can't help adoring our heroes regardless of whether the violence is necessary or not. When war and violence are necessary it is a sure sign that the society is collapsing. Is violence to inflict injury to another as sport really a sign of an advanced well developed society? Our military can only save us from the enemy. It cannot save us from economic depression, deteriorating infrastructure, disease or poverty. It does not contribute to a thriving economy unless it's a war economy. We don't need the military for technological advancement unless it's to find better ways to kill each other. The military is a necessary evil but militarism turns into perpetual war that turns a nation into an evil empire.
